What Is This Stick-Legged Swamp Critter With Wings?

South Florida Swamp Grass

I’m in the same campsite as last winter. I requested this site because it’s on the outer edge of the campground – away from the shower house, Tiki Bar, pool and laundry (all of which can be toxic to me).

In Back Of My Campsite…

About 10 feet from the back of my van, is a grassy area that connects to the Southern Glades.

Some grass is well over my head while other areas are probably knee-high. The “knee-high” height is just a guess – I’m NOT walking in there to verify it!

Deeper within the grass lies the swamp. I can’t see it but the Local’s tell me it’s there.

One Sunny Day…

While outside, I saw a big white bird in a small clearing within the tall grass.

Big white south Florida bird. Egret, Ibis, Heron. Take your pick!

The white, stick-legged bird gracefully saunters through the grass (and sometimes through my campsite).

There’s debate on whether the bird is an Egret, Ibis or Heron but I can say with 100% confidence that it is indeed… a big white bird.

What kind of bird do you think it is?

I say it is an egret. It does not have a curved beak of an ibis. Herons have color.

My guess was Heron, but I really have no clue nor would I have bet the farm on it. Thanks!
