South Florida’s Sticky Situation – Mother Nature Forgot About Spring

A few red leaves in a tree of green leaves. The blue sky and white clouds show through the tree.

The Florida City weather has been pretty toasty this past week.

It seems Mother Nature jumped from winter straight to summer… forgetting about the spring transition.

Florida City weather on March 10, 2024. 83 degrees with 91 feels like temp. 69% humidity with 72 degree dew point.

I’m trying to decide if I need to get outta Dodge or if I can stay a bit longer. The extended forecast changes every time I look at it and the everchanging forecast is no help in making my decision!

If I had air conditioning there would be no need to figure anything out. I’d simply stay until April 1!

I’m Thankful For…

  • The shade tree at my campsite. The tree drops lots of little annoying leaves that I have to brush off the windshield before driving but it also provides some much needed shade.
  • Cloudy days. The clouds definitely help as the direct sun would be more torturous.
  • The breeze. My campsite is on the outer edge of the campground with a swampy grassland behind me. The tip of the Southern Glades runs into this section of land and there’s always a breeze.
  • All of my fans! My roof vent fan and Vornado fan work great. I usually get by with just those 2 fans but, at times like this, I need to dig the third fan out from under my bed.

Without these things the heat would be intolerable and possibly unsafe.

Is It Humid?…

I think it’s a tad humid. It’s a bit annoying when stuff sticks to you but the humidity is tolerable.

On the other hand… other people, including Local’s, say it’s pretty humid now.

For some reason I seem to have adjusted to (what I consider) low levels of humidity.

I used to think I was dying at the slightest bit of humidity – and that was when I lived in an air conditioned house! I often wonder what changed. Is it age related or did I just accept it as it is?

The world may never know!

The Critters Are Lovin’ It!…

Along with the warmth comes the critters.

In a recent post, I shared about a tiny tree frog that snuck in the van… but the lizards have been out and about too!

A lizard sprawled out on my picnic table enjoying the heat from the sun.
This picture was taken through a tinted window.

This little guy has taken control of my picnic table.

As he sprawls across the picnic table heated from the sun, he keeps a watchful eye on the van door. He stays on alert in case I open the door to come outside.

A large iguana at my campsite.

This Iguana is huge! I opened my door the other day and there he was… only a few feet away.

As I watched… and took pictures… he slowly slithered about with his tongue flicking in and out.

I’ve seen him coming and going from under my cement patio. I think he made a home under there. From what I can tell it’s simply a Bachelor Pad (no wife or kids have been seen).

About The Featured Photo…

The photograph at the top of this post is a tree in back of my campsite. When the weather starts warming up I notice red leaves start appearing on the tree.

Parting Thoughts…

With no air conditioning, the rising heat and humidity can become a health hazard – which is why I keep a close eye on it.

At this point, I believe I can stay at least another week or two – or – maybe I’m just being stubborn about leaving. It could honestly be either one.

Time will tell!

I’ve been wondering the same thing here in Big Cypress – what happened to Spring? It got hot real quick here. We are staying until 4/1. I’m hoping we have a cool spell for part of that time. Good luck!

I was wondering if the heat and humidity affected your health much.

Your pictures are great. I hope you get a cool-down soon.

Thankfully, the past few days have been lower humidity and cooler ๐Ÿ˜Ž I stay flexible this time of year, so I’m ready to leave if it starts getting too humid.
