Semi-Wordless Wednesday – The Powerful Aftermath Of April Showers

The rising river directly across from my campsite.

Imagine your campsite is 60 feet or so from the river.

After a rain-filled day, the nighttime brings several torrential downpours.

You wake up, open the curtain and can’t believe your eyes. You open the door to get a better look and immediately hear the roaring current of a rapidly rising river…

The uneven bank has areas where the river is close to spilling over.
The rising river after a rainstorm.
Some areas aren’t as close to overflowing but the fast moving current gives an uneasy feeling.
Flooded campsites after a torrential rain.
The empty campsites across from me are waterlogged. Thankfully, my campsite is slightly elevated and has no standing water.

There are only a few times I’ll risk dueling with Mother Nature and this is not one of them.

The morning plan was to take a shower, make coffee and enjoy the morning until closer to my 11:00am check-out time.

After taking a few pictures, I opt to skip the shower, skip the coffee, and hightail it outta there a few hours earlier than planned.

I can always wash up in the van and I’m always up for a good excuse to stop at a coffee shop!

How would you have handled the situation?

Photos were taken on April 17, 2024 from my campsite at Pecatonica River Trails Park.

I say, good for you to get out of there. It isn’t worth the risk to stay that close to the rising and rushing water. Good decision.

We were evacuated from a campground last year in California due to the rains and so much flooding. It was quite an experience! The nice thing is, we have our “home” with us and can leave whenever, right? Glad you are safe.
