Unexpected Hazards of Using Fly Strips in Your Van

A sticky fly strip hanging over my van life bed.

The flies this summer are worse than ever! I swear I open my door for 2 quick seconds and 10 flies come inside!!!

Once I get my handy-dandy fly swatter out, the chameleon-like flies become invisible.

Yet, when I make lunch, the dastardly little critters reappear, buzzing around my face as I attempt to scoop a spoonful of deliciousness into my mouth without eating a fly.

Fly Strips To The Rescue

Needing extra help with the fly situation, I decided to buy a pack of fly strips.

When I was just a little tike, I remember Grandpa having these sticky fly trap strips hanging in the barn. The strips were always plastered with flies stuck to them.

I was sure they’d work well in the van and keep the influx of summer flies under control.

Hanging The Fly Paper Strip

I read the directions. Then, with a somewhat evil grin on my face, proceeded to pull the sticky strip of doom out of it’s casing.

As the gooey strip stretched to it’s full length, it got stuck to my finger.

I thought a sticky finger would be the least of my problems.

The Hazard Of Hanging Fly Strips In A Tiny Space

During the night, I hung the fly tape over the sink so it was out of my way when I got up to answer the Call of Nature.

During the day, I hung the fly tape over my bed so I could use the kitchen and sink area.

The problem with moving a fly strip is, the sticky strip can get stuck to your clothing.

The problem with hanging a fly strip over your van bed is, if you reach for something you’ve thrown onto your bed, the sticky strip can get stuck in your hair.

The Results

After a more than a day, the fly strip caught 2 whole flies.

The other flies were still buzzing around the van… playing hide and seek every time I got the fly swatter out.

I determined the hazard of having fly strips in the van was not worth the effort. With my propensities, who knows what else I could end up getting the darn thing stuck to!?!?

I bet you never thought I could write a whole post about a silly little fly strip!

I wonder if it would have worked better if you hadn’t moved them around. But who knows? Flies can drive a person crazy! Good luck!

Leaving it in one spot might have been best but, in my small van, there’s not a permanent spot I can leave it where I won’t run into it. I have other items I move around depending on whether it’s day or night. Sadly, there’s not enough space for everything to have a designated spot.

I don’t know how flies know it, but when I get the fly swatter in hand, they disappear. Just like you said. I set it down and the come back again. Just crazy! Grrr! I hope they go away soon.

How flies know what a fly swatter is will forever be a mystery ๐Ÿ˜… It’s cooled off a bit here and the flies seem to have dwindled. Hopefully they stay away!
