Why Do Railroad Crossings Always Summon My Inner Hobo?

I’ve been reunited with Bella (my van) from her time in the shop. She’s peppy, ready to roll… and, frankly, so am I.

After my almost week long high-tech vehicle adventure… driving the van again feels a little archaic. But I’m glad to have her back.

Before I head south in a day or so, it seems a little drive around the countryside is in order!

As I Approach a Railroad Crossing

I do my usual thing:

  • Check for oncoming trains
  • Make sure no one is behind me
  • Stop on the tracks
  • Take a picture (or twelve)
  • Gaze down the tracks as far as the eye can see while pondering where the tracks lead

There’s mystery down there and I want to explore it!

My Thoughts Drift Back to Years Gone By

I remember a few railroad tracks I stumbled upon over the years…

Tracks beckoning to be explored during a crisp Sunday morning drive in northern Illinois.

Snow covered railroad tracks.

Quiet, snow covered tracks after a light snowfall during a northern Illinois winter – memories from my Caregiver Adventures with Dad.

A favorite south Georgia railway track during the fall season. The ground looks like autumn but the trees still shout summer.

Memories of my early van life days and the time spent gallivanting around the backroads of southeastern Georgia.

As I Wander, I Wonder

Why am I so drawn to the railroad?

Was I a hobo in a past life? 🤔

Maybe it’s just part of being nomadic. Or, maybe my nomadic spirit comes from my inner hobo?!

Parting Thoughts

My family is supportive of my current lifestyle. The strangers I meet are usually inquisitive.

However, one semi-snooty person rolled their eyes and scrunched their nose, insisting I was a lowly vagabond because I choose to live in my cozy little home on wheels.

But here’s the thing… What people say about you is a reflection of them – not you.

I allow my inner hobo to shine through regardless of what others think.

Do you have an inner ‘something‘ waiting to shine through? Tell me about it!

Your friendly vagabond,
Connie 🍂

Oh, let’s just ignore the snobs of the world. I love your idea of very carefully taking pictures of railroad tracks. I may try that sometime. But I also happen to like those bike trails – which used to be railroad tracks. Those entice me. What’s around the bend? Have a great day, you vagabond!

The snobs are always good for a chuckle (or more) 😅 I hadn’t realized some bike trails used to be railroad tracks. A new concept to explore! Have a good day, Betty 😊
